Editorial Preface

“หวานเปนลม ขมเปน ยา” (lit. Sweet things are wind. Bitter
things are medicine.) This Thai proverb teaches us to
realize the harm of sweet words, not to take them
seriously. These two opposite flavors are, indeed,
contradictory and cannot blend together. Yet, in this issue
of Light of Dharma, Ratanachanto tells us a story of a
medical sweet, which is called Yanom by the southerners.
It has been passed on for over 2,600 years since the time
of the Buddha. Nowadays, we still see it in festivals in
Phuket every year.

Wasu Koysiripong, a permanent writer of the
magazine, raises a challenging topic of discussion and gives
an answer about the status of Buddhism, whether it is a
religion or only a philosophy.

We have also processed the opinions of four
monks in the month of the Asalha Puja, July, which is the
month of appearance, review, victory and awareness of
the Buddhists in the Quotes from Notable Monks
column.
